To clear things out, I don’t think there is such a thing called bad taste in music, because taste is personal, and how can anyone call a taste bad? I know that some of the music I listen to is characterized as bad-taste-music, but so what? The music makes me happy, sad or appeals to me – so then isn’t it good music to me?
Before I can begin my analysis on my taste in music, I would like to give a survey of my taste in music now and for the past years. As most children I liked to watch “VG lista topp 20” and was probably influenced by this list to some extent. Therefore I would like Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys and/or other artists. However, I would say that my siblings had greater effect upon me than this TV-show.
As my eldest sister, Ingeborg, listened to the 90s euro dance and recorded them on cassettes, which were later listened to by me and my other siblings. Among those, I especially liked listening to Whigfield – Sexy Eyes [not this version though] in the evenings, and some other songs that I know I have on my computer now, but I cannot recall their names. Maybe som La Bouche? My eldest sister also had a CD by Twenty 4 Seven, which I often listened to whilst playing computer-games such as a game I called Huleboer which was insanely fun! :D
As a child I was really captivated by the CD cover! I imagined being the woman :p
I know the lyrics of these songs till this day! Songs I liked the most by them: Take Me Away, Slave To The Music [This song was particularly appreciated whilst playing Huleboer, the ahahnananannea sounds like something a caveman would say/sing!], Music Is My Life. Another example of this kind of music is 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor – Come Take My Hand. I love listening and singing to those songs!
All these songs had a some kind of renaissance for me when I got my own computer [Autumn, 10th grade. 2006!] and started to download music by myself. And now I can listen to those songs and sing a long and not mind :) So I still like them!
As a child I was quite a fan of the semi-Norwegian band Aqua! On a CD a got from Ingeborg for Christmas in 2000 (or before?) it was almost only Aqua songs! But, there was also one song that I really liked, but more because of the music video! Era – Ameno. I wanted to be the woman there, just like I wanted to be the woman in the TV-series Sinbad!
The woman in the video reminded me of Maeve
From 7th grade up till 11th grade [2003-2007], my taste in music was mostly influenced by what my brother listened to in his room. Because of his loud speakers the whole house could hear what he listened to, which was in fact when I think back upon it, kinda nice :) Well, in this period there was a lot of trance, techno and country – all of great importance within the Råne culture. (Råne = hogging, as my eldest sister baptised the verb in English) To mention a few of the songs I listened to in this period where I was influenced by my brother: Günther – Ding Dong Song, Groove Coverage – Poison [bad version], Cascada – Miracle, Gigi d’Agostino – L’Amour Toujours [which I still find great!] And all of their other songs. This is also why I know the lyrics of these songs. Is that common? I mean, not to know lyrics of songs, but to know lyrics that you learnt years ago? In another genre, bands like Iron Maiden, Alan Jackson, Vassendgutane and more were heard from my brother’s room.
Another fascinating CD cover!
When I got my own computer in 10th grade, and could finally download my own music, I started to some degree listen to other music. However, I would still download songs that I could hear from my brother’s room – cause they were so catchy! For instance: ATC – It Goes Around The World.
For the class trip in 10th grade to Scarborough I had put on a lot of Marilyn Manson on my mp3-player, to the astonishment of my class-mates. After that trip I was called Devil in our class, for some bizarre reason that belongs in a different story than this one.
Is this me?
If I was to characterize my taste in music, I would say that I find a lot of different genres good, and that I like a lot of different music, but that I’m most frequent within the whole trance-techno-dance region. However, I think it’s difficult to classify genres, cause there are so many of them and a lot of songs belong to many. This makes the definition of a genre somewhat diffuse to me. What I do know, is that I’m not a particular fan of jazz [though it would probably work in some situations] A good beat, most often displayed by some good old bass, is a must for me.
So why I’m I such a big fan of beat and bass? To some degree I thing it’s from my upbringing, but I also think it got to do with what I use music the most for:
– To make me happy! When I put on some beat I start singing and swirling around in somekind of dance, and then suddenly my worries are gone! :D
– Dancing. Well, can’t say I’m a dancer – more of a jumper and then bass fits perfectly :)
– Jogging. PUSH! PUSH! PUSH! JUMP! JUMP! JUMP! RUN! RUN! RUN! To the beat of the bass! Yes, bass-music like this one gives me that extra push to finish the last hill of my jogging route and use up the last pieces of ATP!
- Not me, but it illustrates my point :p
Another aspect in my taste in music, is that I don’t like bands – I like songs. This means that I don’t have a favourite band or artist, but that I like some songs of most artists. Bruce Springsteen, Iron Maiden, Röyksopp, Franz Ferdinand, The Stranglers, Michael Jackson, Eurovision songs, you name an artist or a band and I’ll bet that I would like at least one song of him/her/them!
Bonkers, yeah, why is this blogpost called bonkers? One of the songs I’ve been listening to since this weekend. I love how the base builds itself up, but the singing isn’t the best… I guess Armand Van Helden is responsible for the good parts of this song!
Bonkers: (Slang) mentally unbalanced; mad; crazy.
This last half-year or year I’ve been greatly influenced by the radio! Every morning I wake up to the sounds of NRK P3. Ronny Brede Aas and Torfinn Borkhus are the best! I love their voices and dialects ♥. ANYWAY, the music on P3 nowadays is really.. hmm.. here comes my lack of ability to characterize genres… independent rock, soft-rock, pop, electro.. HELP!?? Well, songs like Chairlift – Bruises.. arose my attention from listening to the radio :)
A song that has really cheered me up for the past week has been: Pjanoo! I like the running of the cowboy as well!
Who would hesitate a piece of this smoking hunk?
With this I say Good Night, and I hope that I’ve made my taste in music somewhat clearer to you. If you’re still uncertain about something, or want me to clearify anything – don’t hesitate to ask! By the way, if you’ve read all this I would like you to comment – cause believe me – then you’re probably the most devoted and dedicated reader of this blog and THAT should be awarded!
